The past couple of years have seen unprecedented upheaval in the job market, with droves of workers handing in their resignations in what’s being called “The Great Resignation.”

Where are all these people going? And what’s prompting them to leave their jobs behind en masse during such economic uncertainty?

As it turns out, the pandemic caused many to re-evaluate what they want from their careers and lives in general. Furloughs and layoffs also pushed some to explore new professional avenues.

With the job market booming, for now at least, workers hold more power than they have in decades, and they’re using it to depart roles that are no longer fulfilling.

Burnout reaching critical levels

One of the primary drivers of The Great Resignation is that burnout has hit critical levels, especially in frontline industries like healthcare, education, and service sectors.

Endless days of grueling work under stressful conditions and perpetual understaffing has workers fed up.
