Member-only story
Meet Wallace, the Computer Mouse. Wallace always wanted to be a real mouse. Unfortunately, instead of being a rodent, he’s a battery-operated object that has no purpose other than to click on things.
He doesn’t know what a mouse cursor is or what it looks like because he’s busy dragging his face and body on the desk. People tap their finger on him too much. They click, click, and click even when the computer is frozen. People slam him, toss him, drop him on the desk and on the floor. He also has to put up with dirty human hands so he’s either covered in sweat, chicken grease and Cheeto dust, or something else…
While Wallace is a little battered and dirty, he does feel somewhat important. Thanks to him, the many people that use him have written great articles, started novels, and even start many online startups. On the other hand, he’s also the same tool people use to click on links they shouldn’t click on.
Wallace dreams of the day he can escape the confines of an office to a mouse colony where he can roam with his brethren.
Will that day ever come? Never. He’s a computer mouse and that is all he’ll be. On the bright side, someone did buy him little mouse ears to put on his body. Maybe that’ll make him feel more than just a computer accessory.
