We are going to look at the painting by the American landscape painter, Winslow Homer called Croquet Scene.

In this painting, we see a lovely summertime scene of three women engaging in a sport called croquet. Croquet is a sport that is like golf but it’s not as interesting and hardcore. You are gently hitting a ball with a mallet through hoops attached to the ground.

The women are wearing their lovely outdoor attire and wait to start the next game after the man on the ground positions the ball for the lady in the red dress.

Winslow’s early paintings depicted figures outdoors bathed in sunlight. This was from the mid-1860s so this was way before any climate crisis and normal 100F temperature summer weather. But even if the temperatures were a mild 80F, wearing a large multi-layered long sleeve dress may be dressing a bit too warmly.
